How has the start of 2020 been for you? Did you leave 2019 behind? Maybe you took what you loved and what felt good with you into 2020 and left behind the rest? Have you set some goals for this New Year or are you desperately trying to find ways to be more productive so you can accomplish all the things you dream of this year.
Maybe 2019 smacked ya in the head and you can't get past it - we feel ya! It was a big year for a lot of us and maybe you started 2020 slow and steady because of it.
This is the year to start putting one foot in front of the other and yourself what you truly want.. and just go for it, what's there to lose?
Before we get into some tips on how to be more productive this year, let's start with changing our perspective to the work we're actually doing. Keeping the values of what you're doing, what you want to create and why you're doing it will change the entire perspective as we take on our to do lists. This will help in prioritising our work and the impact we want to make in the world.
Ask yourself some questions:
- What time of day am I most productive?
- What interrupts me the most?
- Am I happy?
- Why am I doing what I'm doing?
- What are some of my big goals for 2020?
Now that we have our minds turning, how can we be more productive this year?
1. Find a place that inspires you to work from
Maybe that's the cute cafe down the road from your house, or a room in your house filled with plants and good energy. Find a place where you can sit down, away from clutter and the things that will distract you.
2. Do your most important tasks first
Above we asked you, what time of day are you the most productive. We find ourselves more productive first thing in the morning. So maybe you head down to that cute cafe, order a coffee and start your most important tasks first. Completing these important tasks will set you up to tackle the less important ones with ease!
3. Know when to say no
How long has that task been on your to-do list that you kept putting off.. maybe it's not very important after all. Delete it or get it done first.
4. Schedule the time to exercise
This will help tremendously with becoming more productive. Everything feels good when you feel good.
5. Declutter your workspace, your bedroom, your kitchen, the house
I always find I am more productive when the space around me is clean and tidy, I can't focus on my tasks at hand if I know there is laundry to do or a messy kitchen.
6. Focus on one task at a time
We've been trying to get better at this as well, who tends to multitask? We do! But we're trying to get better at focusing on one task at hand until it's completed, and then we'll move on to the next.
Productivity is a constant state of continuous change. Cut yourself some slack, we're just human and doing the best we can. Some day's we're going to feel energised and clear and other days our minds are going to be so cloudy we may as well just drink coffee and listen to a good podcast and THAT IS OK. Know that!
Don't feel like you constantly have to be grinding in order to be successful! Drinking coffee, putting on your fav activewear and listening to a podcast is equally great too.
I know for me, if I'm not feeling it I won't force it anymore.. I'll acknowledge the fact that spending a couple hours going for a beach walk, going for a hike or a swim will actually put me in a better headspace to tackle my work later in the evening.
Do what feels right for you, it's all about the balance.
